The Fan Energy Rating (FER) is a standard set by the US Department of Energy (DOE) that measures the airflow efficiency of fans in residential furnaces and gas-packaged units. Introduced to promote energy efficiency, the FER standard has been mandatory for all HVAC manufacturers for new equipment since July 3, 2019.
Understanding FER Requirements
To comply with the FER requirements, a furnace fan must move a specific volume of air through the ductwork at a defined speed measured in cubic feet per minute (CFM). A furnace must deliver at least 400 CFM of airflow per watt of electricity used. Moreover, it must meet the criteria of low noise levels and controlled temperature rise during operation. This ensures optimal performance while reducing heating costs.
