An auto changeover is a thermostat feature that automatically switches an HVAC system between heating and cooling modes to maintain a predefined temperature range without manual intervention. On a thermostat, this mode is represented by ‘Auto’ and is useful during transitional seasons like spring and fall, when outdoor temperatures fluctuate throughout the day.

How Does an Auto Changeover Thermostat Operate?

When the auto changeover feature is enabled, the thermostat operates using two temperature setpoints. The heat setpoint defines the temperature below which the HVAC system turns on heating, while the cool setpoint defines the temperature above which it activates cooling. The difference between heating and cooling setpoints is known as temperature delta. You can adjust it on your thermostat. This gap is usually a few degrees, helping prevent rapid switching between heating and cooling.

Suppose the heat setpoint is 68°F and the cool setpoint is 75°F. If the indoor temperature rises to 76°F, the thermostat automatically turns on cooling to bring the temperature down. If the temperature drops to 67°F, the heating system activates to warm the space. When the indoor temperature stays between 68°F and 75°F, the HVAC system remains idle, maintaining comfort without running heating or cooling unnecessarily.

Benefits of an Auto Changeover Thermostat

Auto changeover adds convenience to manage home climate by removing the need to manually switch between heating and cooling modes as weather conditions change. Furthermore, this feature enhances comfort by maintaining a consistent, balanced indoor temperature throughout the day.

This feature saves energy by running heating or cooling only when needed. During the idle state, your HVAC system isn’t operating, improving overall energy efficiency. By minimizing system cycling, temperature delta minimizes the risk of equipment wear and tear.

Many auto changeover thermostats include a built-in time delay to prevent immediate switching between heating and cooling, helping protect equipment from short cycling and extending system lifespan.

Considerations & Limitations

Setting the heat and cool setpoints too close together can cause frequent switching between heating and cooling. This reduces efficiency and results in high energy consumption.  Additionally, proper wiring and system compatibility are essential, as incomplete wiring or missing relays can prevent the auto changeover function from working correctly.

Furthermore, the performance may vary by HVAC system type; heat pumps typically benefit most from auto changeover, while systems with separate furnaces and air conditioners often require more precise setpoint tuning.
