NATE Certification is a credential awarded by North American Technician Excellence, a non‑profit organization, to HVACR professionals. NATE ensures HVAC technicians meet industry standards by testing both their knowledge and hands-on experience. This provides homeowners with the confidence that their HVAC technician is highly skilled and reliable.
What Is NATE?
NATE (North American Technician Excellence) is a coalition that includes the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and ASHRAE® (American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air-Conditioning Engineers). It creates standardized tests for HVACR professionals. To develop the exams, it works with a nationwide committee of HVAC experts. The committee identifies Knowledge Areas of Technician Expertise (KATEs) based on real-world experience and uses them to create the certification tests. Technicians who successfully pass all required exams earn NATE certification, demonstrating their competence and professionalism.
How HVAC Technicians Become NATE Certified?
Technicians must pass the NATE exam with a score of 70% or higher. The types of exams vary depending on the level of certification a technician seeks.
New technicians are required to pass two entry-level exams: Ready-To-Work and HVAC Support Technician. These are designed for those just starting in the field and are recommended to be completed within the first six months to a year on the job.
After passing the initial exams, HVAC technicians can pursue NATE certification through one of two pathways:
- Certified HVAC Professional (CHP-5) Pathway: Technicians earn certification by passing five exams covering: HVAC fundamentals, electrical and controls, comfort and airflow, installation, and service.
- Traditional NATE Certification Pathway: Technicians take the NATE Core Exam plus at least one specialty exam in an area of their choice.
NATE certifications are valid for two years. For recertification, technicians must complete 16 continuing education hours through the NATE website within two years and pay a renewal fee. They can also retake the specialty exam before the certification expiration date.
