A ductless heat pump is an HVAC unit that heats or cools a room without needing any ductwork. The system has an indoor evaporator and an outdoor condenser. These units are connected via refrigerant line sets that circulate refrigerant to move heat in or out of the space. A reversing valve enables both heating and cooling modes, making ductless heat pumps an efficient alternative to traditional systems.
These heat pumps are primarily designed for zoned heating and cooling, making them ideal for individual rooms or smaller areas. In larger homes, a multi-zone mini-split can connect several indoor units to a single outdoor unit. This setup delivers even temperature control across the entire house.
How Do Ductless Heat Pumps Work?
Cooling Mode
The indoor unit (air handler) draws in warm air from the room, and the refrigerant in the evaporator coil absorbs the heat. This heated refrigerant then travels via refrigerant lines to the outdoor unit (compressor). There, the outdoor coil releases the absorbed heat into the outside air. Once the refrigerant cools down again, it circulates back indoors to repeat the process. This continuous cycle efficiently removes heat from the space, keeping it cool and comfortable.
Heating Mode
When a ductless heat pump switches from cooling to heating, the reversing valve redirects the refrigerant flow. The outdoor unit extracts heat from the outdoor air, and the refrigerant absorbs it. The compressor then increases the refrigerant’s temperature. This heated refrigerant travels through the refrigerant lines to the indoor coil, where the indoor unit (air handler) releases the heat into the room. Once the refrigerant cools down, it returns to the outdoor unit to absorb more heat, repeating the cycle.
