Bed time is supposed to be the most comfortable time during our whole day. We all want perfect room conditions so that we can relax and sleep well. The ideal room temperature is always relative and never absolute. It varies from people to people. Some like it hot and some otherwise.
Once considered a luxury, the air conditioning has become an absolute necessity in our residences as well as work places. With the advent of air conditioning, we as its direct users are more and more fussy towards the ideal room temperature. The magic number which matches to our personal preferences of comfort as well as efficiency.
The basic purpose of air conditioning is comfort. The installation, maintenance and running of any air conditioning system costs money, a lot of money. The air conditioners usage is a major utility costs in home or at work. But who cares for costs once it is giving you the comfort you desire and deserve.
Where is your comfort zone in the world of air conditioning?
Here is the big question. Does your air conditioning give you the comfort, you so desperately want? Are you waking up in the middle of night due to too high or too low temperature or you are getting uninterrupted sleep every night. What is that magic temperature for utmost comfort during your sleep or the day time temperature range ensuring you the comfort you always yearned for?
Before moving forward, let us try to define the heat index or your feeling of heat. Well, the heat index is simply the combination of relative humidity and the temperature. When the relative humidity level is high, the temperature feels warmer to the human body and vice versa.
Apart from combo of relative humidity and temperature the type of clothing is also important factor while pursuing the magic range of comfortable temperature. As per American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), “The preferred temperature ranges for occupants dressed in summer clothes is 73° to 79°F (22.5° to 26° C).”
As per the US Department of Energy, the recommended day time thermostat settings for summers is 78 degrees. At this temperature, you should feel comfortable; well most of you. The night time temperature is a bit tricky as higher set point than day is recommended but actually we desire and are accustomed to much lower like 70-72 degrees.
Can we achieve both comfort and savings through effective use of air conditioning?
The answer is yes. The most widely recommended temperature to achieve both comfort and savings is 78°F (26°C) inside your homes in summer times. Furthermore, you can save up to 10 percent energy if you increase of 7 to 10 degrees, while you’re away from your home. Similarly, reducing your home’s temperature few degrees lower would increase your cooling costs to a considerable high. As a rule of thumb, you will save 3–5% on air conditioning costs with each degree increase of temperature setting on your thermostat.
So, we know that we have to create a balance between comfort and savings while we are awake. And, we all manage it well as per our personal preferences. But, what happens when we are asleep? What is the optimal temperature while sleeping? Is comfort important or the savings? What if you can achieve both and that too without waking ourselves.
Best temperature for a sound sleep
For optimal sleep, 60 and 67 degrees Fahrenheit is the suggested bedroom temperature for majority of the people. Exceptions are there but anything between 60 and 67 should work for a comfortable sleep. A cool room have a better probability for you to go to sleep seamlessly. Another study recommends to keep the room between 65 and 72 degrees. At the end of the day personal preferences come into action and temperature range keeps on shifting from person to person.
Air conditioning settings higher or lower than your body requirement may lead to restlessness and can also affect the quality of your sleep. As per H. Craig Heller, PhD, professor of biology at Stanford University, “When you go to sleep, your set point for body temperature — the temperature your brain is trying to achieve — goes down,”. In case of two low or two high room temperature, your body struggles to achieve the set point and your quality of sleep is compromised.
Type of Air Conditioning vis-à-vis your thermal comfort
Air conditioning comprise of two main types, ducted and ductless air conditioning.
In the ducted air conditioning world, the smart thermostat with more learning or less learning are doing the trick for us and people are sleeping better than the pre smart thermostat era.
The ductless air conditioners are usually standalone air conditioners like window ACs, portable ACs and mini splits. These types of ACs are gaining huge traction in the US residential market owning to their better efficiency and economical cost of installation.
Unlike its counterpart ducted system, where you will find a plethora of smart thermoset offerings, the ductless ACs are usually dumb and they do not come with any smart controls.

Similar to smart thermostats for ducted air conditioners, the smart controls for ductless system are also entering the HVAC market. These smart controls give the power of control from anywhere to the end user. The market is relatively new and very limited providers of smart controls have presence in the market. The few players available in the market, do claim that their smart solution add to the convenience of users and also helps the user to save energy on their air condition usage.
