A heat recovery ventilator (HRV) is a mechanical ventilation system that improves air quality by exchanging stale air with fresh outdoor air.

How Does a Heat Recovery Ventilator Work?

A heat recovery ventilator works on the principle of heat transfer. The system consists of two separate air streams: one for the outgoing stale air and another for the incoming fresh outdoor air. These air streams pass through a heat recovery core that allows heat to transfer between the two streams without the air itself mixing.

As stale indoor air is expelled, it passes through the heat exchanger, transferring its thermal energy to the core. At the same time, fresh outdoor air passes through the opposite side of the heat exchanger, where it is preheated in winter or precooled in summer. This helps minimize energy loss while maintaining a continuous supply of fresh air.

Heat Recovery Ventilator vs. Energy Recovery Ventilator

Both heat recovery ventilators (HRV) and energy recovery ventilators (ERV) operate on similar principles; the key difference lies in what they transfer between the two air streams.

An HRV only exchanges heat between the outgoing and incoming air streams. It recovers thermal energy from the stale air and uses it to precondition the incoming fresh air, but it does not transfer moisture. HRV systems are well-suited for colder, drier climates, such as northern regions, where humidity control is less of a concern, and the primary goal is to retain heat during the winter months.

An ERV, on the other hand, transfers both heat and moisture between the two air streams. It is better suited to humid areas, as it prevents the air in your home from becoming too dry.

Benefits of HRV Systems

Improves Energy Efficiency

One of the biggest advantages of an HRV system is its contribution to energy efficiency.

An HRV recovers up to 80% of the heat energy from the outgoing air and transfers it to the incoming air. This means your home stays well-ventilated without significant energy loss. Over time, this can lead to noticeable reductions in your heating and cooling bills, making an HRV a smart long-term investment for energy-conscious homeowners.

Removes Pollutants

Over time, indoor air accumulates pollutants such as dust, allergens, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), carbon dioxide, and moisture. An HRV continuously flushes out this stale, contaminated air and replaces it with fresh outdoor air, significantly improving indoor air quality. This is especially important in tightly sealed, energy-efficient homes where natural ventilation is limited.

Maintains Indoor Comfort

An HRV helps maintain a consistent and comfortable indoor environment by regulating both temperature and humidity levels. In winter, it prevents the dry, stuffy air that comes with sealing a home against the cold. In summer, it helps keep indoor humidity in check, making your space feel cooler and more comfortable even on the hottest days.

Reduces the Burden on Your HVAC System

By pre-conditioning the incoming fresh air before it enters your living space, an HRV reduces the workload on your heating and cooling system. Your HVAC system does not have to work as hard to bring the incoming air to the desired temperature, which translates to less wear and tear on the system and a longer overall lifespan.

HRV System Maintenance

Like any mechanical system, an HRV requires regular maintenance to operate at peak efficiency.

  • Check and clean filters every 1 to 3 months, depending on usage and air quality.
  • The heat recovery core should be inspected and cleaned at least once a year. A dirty or clogged core reduces the system’s efficiency and can restrict airflow.
  • Inspect the ductwork and vents connected to your HRV for any blockages, leaks, or buildup of dirt and debris.
