Pleated filters are air filters installed in HVAC systems, air purifiers, and other IAQ devices. They use a folded sheet of polyester, cotton, or synthetic media to increase surface area and capture airborne particles as air passes through. This helps reduce dust, pollen, lint, and pet dander in your home while also protecting HVAC components from debris buildup. Their design makes them an effective option for improving indoor air quality and maintaining system performance.

MERV Ratings of Pleated Filters

Pleated filters are available in a wide range of MERV ratings. MERV ratings indicate how effectively a filter can capture particles of different sizes. Most residential pleated filters fall between MERV 6 and MERV 13, offering flexibility for various indoor air quality needs.

  • MERV 6–8: Suitable for standard residential use; captures basic household dust and lint.
  • MERV 9–1: Better for homes with pets or allergy concerns; captures smaller particles like pollen and mold spores.
  • MERV 12–13: High-efficiency filtration capable of trapping fine particles such as smoke and bacteria-carrying particulates.

Benefits of Pleated Filters

  • Better Filtration

The pleated design creates a larger surface area, enabling the filter to capture small particles like pollen, pet dander, mold spores, and dust mites. This enhanced capture ability helps improve indoor air quality compared to basic fiberglass filters.

  • Longer Lifespan

Because pleated filters can hold more debris, they typically last longer—often between 60 and 90 days, depending on system usage and home conditions. Their extended lifespan makes them a convenient and low-maintenance option for homeowners.

  • Improved HVAC Efficiency

By preventing dust and debris from settling on coils, blower motors, and other internal components, pleated filters help the HVAC system operate efficiently. Cleaner components reduce strain on the system and may contribute to lower energy consumption over time.

Pleated Air Filters & Air Flow Restrictions

A pleated filter generally maintains good airflow when it’s properly sized and replaced in a timely manner. Airflow issues typically arise when the filter is overdue for replacement or has an excessively high MERV rating. They can also occur when the return duct or grille is undersized and cannot handle the added resistance.

Considerations Before Choosing Pleated Air Filters

Pleated filters work well for most standard HVAC systems, but they are not designed for extreme conditions. In high-demand environments like industrial facilities or cleanrooms, they may not offer the durability or performance of specialized filters. For typical residential and light-commercial use, however, pleated filters offer a reliable balance of good filtration, reasonable cost, and overall dependable performance.
