Ductwork refers to the network of tubes or channels that carry heated or cooled air from an HVAC system to different areas of a home or building. They are typically made from materials such as galvanized steel, aluminum, or fiberglass.

The ducts are connected to air vents or registers in each room, allowing conditioned air to enter living spaces and maintain a consistent indoor temperature. Ductwork is usually concealed within attics, basements, crawl spaces, or utility areas to keep it out of sight while efficiently distributing air throughout the building.

Supply & Return Ducts

Supply and return ducts work together to circulate air throughout your home.

Supply vents deliver conditioned air from your HVAC system into living spaces, while return ducts pull unconditioned air back to the furnace or air handler for reheating or recooling. Supply ducts terminate at floor, wall, or ceiling registers, where you can feel warm or cool air flowing into the room. Return ducts connect to return air vents, usually located on walls or ceilings, that draw air back into the system.

For proper airflow and efficient system operation, avoid blocking HVAC vents or registers with furniture, curtains, or vent covers.

Types of Ductwork

  • Sheet Metal Ducts: They are made from galvanized steel or aluminum and are known for their durability. Sheet-metal ducts are commonly used in homes where reliability is important. They provide excellent airflow performance and are less prone to air leaks compared to other duct types.
  • Flexible Ducts: They are made up of plastic or metalized polyester. They are lightweight and bendable, making them easy to install in tight spaces.
  • Fiberglass Ducts: These are made from fiberglass insulation, which helps reduce heat loss and system noise. They are installed in attics and basements where temperature control is important.

Ductwork Installation

Ductwork installation takes place during new home construction or when replacing old, damaged, or inefficient ducts and vents. Proper installation requires ducts to be correctly sized, well-sealed, and securely positioned to ensure efficient airflow with minimal air leakage.

Poorly installed or inadequately insulated ductwork can lead to energy loss, uneven heating or cooling, and higher energy bills.  A professional inspection can help confirm your duct system is properly installed and functioning as it should.

Ductwork Maintenance

Proper ductwork maintenance helps ensure efficient airflow and optimal HVAC system performance. Keep supply and return vents clear by avoiding furniture or rugs that may block them. Schedule regular ductwork inspections to identify issues, such as debris buildup or mold growth. A professional duct cleaning is usually required if ducts are heavily clogged with dust or mold.

Also, inspect your ductwork for air leaks. Seal any gaps or cracks using an appropriate duct sealant to prevent conditioned air from escaping. If you’re unsure about the location or severity of leaks, it’s always best to consult a professional HVAC technician
