If you have an air conditioner, you must have been in one of those situations where you had to turn your house upside down to find the remote. No matter how carefully you place it, somehow, it finds its place between the couch cushions or under the chairs!
If you’re tired of playing this hide and seek, have lost your remote, or are looking for a secondary remote, then you might find comfort in a universal AC remote, or even better, a smart AC control.
What Is a Universal AC Remote Control?
A universal remote control is programmed to control the same type of electronic device of multiple brands. For instance, you can purchase a universal remote control to operate your television, air conditioner, lamp, and other devices.
A universal air conditioner remote control is compatible with multiple air conditioner brands. It can control any air conditioner using IR signals, hub or blasters, or hybrid controls irrespective of its manufacturer tag. If you cannot find the exact manufacturer remote for your air conditioner, a universal remote can efficiently operate it at a fraction of the cost!
These universal AC remotes are, though, mostly not of superior quality. A smart, universal AC control, on the other hand, has three excellent features:
- It can work with any air conditioner such as a mini-split, portable, or window AC (that comes with an IR remote). Meaning that it is universal.
- It makes any normal AC smart, meaning you can now control your air conditioner using your phone from anywhere, anytime. iOS and Android apps are absolutely free.
- It adds additional intelligent functionalities and all the benefits of a smart AC for your air conditioner. Using the app, you can access numerous features such as scheduling, geofencing, Comfy Mode, and more.
Do Universal Remote Controls Work With Air Conditioners?
The short answer is yes; universal remotes do work with air conditioners. You can program your universal remote according to the specific type of air conditioner you have, and it will work just like a standard AC remote control.
But the drawback with these universal remotes is that they might not provide the complete set of features your original remote might have. This can include specific functions like turbo modes, freeze protection modes, or scheduling features. For that, you might have to opt for a smart AC controller, like the Cielo Breez Plus.
Your best choice to make any mini-split, window,
or portable AC smart. Enhance your comfort and savings.

How to Set up a Universal AC Remote?
There are hundreds of universal AC remotes available in the market. You need to find the one that is compatible with more air conditioner brands and specifically the one you have in your home.
You can do this by looking at the compatible code sheet for universal AC remotes and matching it with your AC model’s code. Remove and Replace has compiled a list of codes that you can skim through and find the one for your model.

Smart AC Controllers

The best replacement for your air conditioner remote control is a smart AC controller. Besides the basic remote-control features, it provides several smart features to make your air conditioning options convenient.
With features like Comfy Mode, you can automate your home environment based on your temperature or humidity preferences. The smart remote controller automatically keeps your indoor environment within your preferred range. Do you know what the best part is? You won’t even need to worry about turning it on and off yourself.
It will turn your AC off after you leave your home and on before you arrive using geofencing. In addition to that, you can control your ductless mini-split from anywhere using your smartphone and set weekly schedules.
A smart universal AC remote control such as Cielo Breez is compatible with almost all air conditioner brands and their remotes.
To make their case strong, smart AC controllers can save you up to 25% on your energy bills. Hence a great addition to your smart home!
Setting up a Smart AC Control
If you opt for a smart AC control instead of a universal AC remote, the set-up process takes 1 minute! It’s automatic, and there is no need to manually hunt for codes if you have your AC’s original remote. Here is how you can set-up Cielo Breez smart AC controllers:
- Place or mount your Cielo Breez device near your air conditioner or heat pump.
- Connect with the power cable and plug-in the adapter to turn on your device.
- Download the “Cielo Home” app from “App Store” or “Play Store” and register as a new user.

Turn Your Phone Into a Universal Air Conditioner Remote
If you have an Android phone with IR blasters, you can turn it into a universal remote control for your air conditioner. They can communicate with electronic devices that function by receiving a command through an IR beam.
You would have to download an application to control your air conditioner using your phone. The app will have different brands listed, and then you can choose from various options to change the modes, temperatures, and other settings.
How to Turn Your Air Conditioner on/off Without a Remote?
If you’ve lost your remote and can’t seem to find it or it has stopped working all of a sudden, you’d need a quick solution to turn it on or off.
In most of the indoor air conditioning units you have in your homes, you don’t see any button. It’s just to make it look cleaner and sleeker. It doesn’t mean that your AC unit has no power button of its own. It is designed as such to hide it under the AC filter plate’s cladding. All you’ve to do is lift the plate, and you’d see a power button.
We would recommend not to depend on this method for an extended period of time, though. Get a replacement remote as soon as you can because of safety reasons. It’s not convenient to reach your AC’s height multiple times a day, just to turn it on/off.
Now that you have all the information you needed, it’s time to get up and make your purchase to get your AC running without any inconvenience.

I cannot find the remote code for our Rinnai air conditioner can anyone help?
Is this unit a heater also, or only AC? I see two modes, one looks like snowflake, one looks like rain drop. Is there a manual available?
Hi Gayle, which unit are you talking about?
As far as the remote symbols are concerned, the cold flake denotes cool mode. In this mode, your air conditioner removes heat and humidity and pushes cold air into your house.
The raindrop symbol refers to the dry mode. This is used in humid climates. Dry mode removes the extra humidity in your room by cycling the compressor on and off for short periods.
Very informative and impressive post you have written, this is quite interesting and i have went through it completely. Keep sharing such valuable information.
